Helping Families Resolve Cross-Border Divorce Disputes

Navigating family conflict requires both understanding and experience, particularly when multiple cultures, countries, or legal systems are involved. Families facing international relocation, cross-border issues, or disputes that span different legal jurisdictions often need to coordinate across time zones, cultural expectations, and varying legal frameworks.

Fernando I. Andrade, Mediator at Andrade & Associates, specializes in family mediation and domestic violence cases with a focus on collaboration, trauma-informed care, and effective communication. He provides both domestic and international mediation services, assisting families in resolving disputes efficiently while minimizing emotional and financial strain. Fernando emphasizes a positive, client-centered approach that helps families avoid adversarial court processes and protects children from divorce-related trauma. Currently pursuing a PhD in Family Law and International Family Law in Madrid, with a thesis focused on trauma, Fernando also holds certifications recognized by 159 countries through the Hague Convention.

“I became a mediator because I wanted to help families communicate directly and resolve conflicts cooperatively, rather than letting the legal system create divisions between them. I’ve seen cases where parents wanted to work together but were forced into adversarial positions by the court process. Mediation allows them to regain control of the outcome and create solutions that truly fit their family’s needs.” – Fernando Andrade, Mediator

Fernando’s journey into the legal system began after immigrating from Chile to the United States in 1990. He initially worked in labor and contracting positions while pursuing his education. After his neighbor was involved in a car accident, he helped to translate for them at a meeting with their attorney, which caught the lawyer’s attention. This encounter opened the door to part-time translation work with law firms and eventually the courts, where he became one of the first participants in Georgia’s pilot interpreter certification program for Spanish speakers. Fernando continued working in judicial interpretation for more than two decades, maintaining strict neutrality and confidentiality while assisting both defense and prosecution cases.

“These experiences gave me a deep understanding of the judicial system’s strengths, limitations, and ethical challenges, guiding me toward mediation. I realized that helping parties communicate directly and find constructive solutions allows them to resolve conflict in ways the court system often cannot.”

In 2011, Fernando transitioned from interpretation to professional mediation. He specializes in cross-border family disputes, domestic violence cases, and trauma-informed conflict resolution. His expertise spans emotional intelligence, body language analysis, de-radicalization strategies, and navigating international legal systems, including Hague Convention cases. Fernando’s deep understanding of family dynamics, both domestic and international, enables him to offer practical guidance and empathetic support to families navigating complex divorce situations.

Throughout his career, Fernando has helped families craft agreements that address both legal and cultural considerations. He works with parents from different countries to create parenting plans, visitation schedules, and property agreements that account for differing legal systems, time zones, and cultural norms. He also emphasizes trauma awareness, helping parents understand how conflict impacts children and guiding families toward solutions that prioritize child well-being. His work combines extensive international training with academic credentials, including a master’s degree in International Conflict Management and Conflict Resolution, and ongoing PhD studies in international and family law.

“Every family comes from a place of unique challenges and experiences. Trauma, whether from divorce, loss, or past abuse, can shape the way people interact and make decisions. My role is to help families recognize these patterns, transform conflict into understanding, and reach agreements that protect their children and strengthen their relationships. It’s about turning difficult situations into constructive outcomes.”

Through virtual and in-person mediation, Fernando creates safe, supportive environments where clients can communicate openly and reach meaningful agreements. He brings not only professional expertise but also personal insight, shaped by his experiences in the Chilean Navy, navigating multiple marriages and divorces, and understanding the challenges faced by families across cultures. Fernando’s work demonstrates that mediation can be both practical and empathetic, guiding families through complex situations while minimizing emotional and financial harm.
